This is a day to learn about the legacy of the Residential Indian Boarding Schools and its impact on the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe and other Native American groups. Although this day is a time of education and reflection about a damaging time in our past and recent history in California, it is a peaceful gathering for sharing, healing, food, children’s activities, and music for families to stand in solidarity to recognize the Indigenous children and Native communities who were impacted and suffered due to the Federal and private Indian Boarding Schools.
FREE, FAMILY-FRIENDLY, WITH BEADING, GAMES, MUSIC, AND FOOD FOR ALL!
Where: Sierra Pines United Methodist Church, 22559 W. Hacienda Dr., Grass Valley
This will be an informal, conversation-based seminar. Two Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe members and CHIRP's Research and Archival Intern will hold an open conversation regarding the history of the Tribe, their known historical connections to Cornwall, the relationship between their political struggle and international support or recognition of this history, and their ideas for moving forward in collaboration with institutions such as the Royal Cornwall Museum and international universities.
Speakers: Tribal Spokesperson Shelly Covert; Tribal Council Member Saxon Thomas; Intern and PhD candidate Megan Renoir
There will be a 45-minute dialogue between Shelly and Saxon, with support and overview of the session provided by Megan. This time is inclusive of open space for the audience to enter the discussion, however we also expect to open space following the dialogue session for 30 minutes of Q&A.

Join us for the Opening of Visibility Through Art at the Rood, as part of Art in Public Spaces, a new partnership between Nevada County Arts Council and the County of Nevada. We are combining this important event with our monthly Creatives Meetup, as a collaboration with the Nevada City Rancheria and California Heritage: Indigenous Research Project (CHIRP).
The exhibition will feature work from CHIRP’s extensive Visibility Through Art collection, which is inspired by the Nevada City Rancheria’s desire to engage local artists to authentically represent the Nisenan’s rich but nearly forgotten history in Nevada County. A community art initiative produced annually as part of CHIRP's Arts and Culture Program, Visibility Through Art is an intentional and informed collaboration between local artists and members of the Tribe, through which a theme or subject of importance to the Tribe is explored, culminating in an annual exhibition.
This year's VTA exhibit selection features Artworks by: Alyssa Walz, Andy Cerrona, Fabienne Annick, Jenny Hale, Jessa Hurst, Leilani Webb, Lori Lachman, Maile Claire, Mira Clark, Nikila Badua, R. Rehrer, Rama Cryer, Ron Kenedi, Sarah Thomas, Saree Robinson, Shelly Covert, Ursula X Young
Nevada County Arts Council’s monthly meetups for creatives are held on the first Thursday of each month, co-hosted at a new location throughout the Grass Valley–Nevada City Cultural District. Meetups serve as an opportunity for artists, culture bearers, and the community to come together and inspire one another, and for the Council to share invaluable information such as upcoming grant opportunities, free resources and important news on the arts.
